Medium: Japanese woodblock print with gauffrage embossing on the cat (seen in indirect light).
Condition: Woodblock print is sealed inside matte and is possibly adhered to board. Some creasing visible in side lighting.

Tall and slender vase of heishi-shape made of fine, light brown stoneware, covered in a multi color purple flambé glaze. Over this in mostly white enamel a scene is painted of a large, partially deconstructed/built up skeleton, tied to sticks, and a host of small skeletons dancing and running around it between small clouds of gold dots.

The shoulder of the vase decorated in blue, white and greenish enamels and gold with leaf-like shapes, meandering lines and dots.

A set of nesting bowls in the highly sought Taireiji style by Kiyomizu Rokubei V decorated with wild chrysanthemum in white on soft pink. Each bears an unusual six sided stamp reading Yunen. A lovely tray in the shape of a split lotus leaf by Ito Tetsugai enclosed in a period wooden box titled Sencha Shiki Habon. It is roughly 53 x 25 cm (20-1/2 x 10 inches), expertly carved to be incredibly thin. Trays like these were used as decorative objects in the service of steeped green tea, and were very popular from the Meiji through early Showa eras.

Antique Japanese pair of Kutani ware porcelain fu-dogs. Each figure is glazed brown with green curling mane and tail. They stand on a yellow and brown glazed rectangular platforms. One has an open mouth while the other has a small horn. Fu-dogs or Foo-lions are fierce protectors but are also playful and energetic.

Tanomura Chokugai(1905-1997) was a Japanese painter born in Kyoto. Great-grandson of Tanomura Chokunyu(1814-1907). He studied under Tanaka Hakuin(1866-1934). He was a member of the Kyoto Japanese Painters Association and chairman of the Kyoto Shogain.
