A beautiful deep fiery maple serving tray by Tsuji Eiho (b. 1941) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kaede-zo Fukiurushi Mori-ki. This hard-paste porcelain bowl is glazed over a glaze of iron red and green. The underside bears a four-character mark in cobalt blue. The decoration depicts the eight Chinese Taoist immortals with their attributes. This bowl dates from the Ming Dynasty, and its style corresponds to the reigns of the Jiajing or Wanli emperors, who ruled in the 16th century. This depiction of the eternal “ensō” on a backdrop of pearly white feldspar over red clay signifies enlightenment, the eternal, the nothingness, and the freedom of the mind to envision and to create.
