Price on Request One of the most extraordinary gold repairs I have seen on a tea bowl in my nearly 30 years in Japan. If you search far and wide occasionally you can find maki-e gold painting on ceramic pieces, however, in almost all cases it is the “seigaiha” pattern of overlapping half waves. Here we see a rather intricate composition of autumn botanical leaves and florals on a “nashiji” or pear-skin gold painting that utilizes an alloy of gold and copper to achieve this radiant and texture...

$3,500.00 A rare and interesting offering, here we have an exquisite celadon phoenix vase with Chinese form and patterning. First generation Sozan gained wide acclaim in the Meiji period primarily for his faithful recreations of Southern Song Dynasty celadons that incorporated a luminous “kinuta” glaze. While you occasionally find the smaller version of this vase in the 18cm - 23cm height range, I have only seen one or two examples of this larger size in the many years I have been sourcing...

$388.00 This child kimono is hand-dyed with Yuzen dyeing, indicating that it was worn by members of the upper class. The frugality edicts issued in the late Edo period (1841-1843) had a major impact on the patterns worn by commoners. This kimono exemplifies this characteristic. At the time, kimonos with bold, ornate patterns were not permitted. As a result, people preferred kimonos with delicate hems, like this one. The unique, delicate pattern is hand-painted and embroidered at the hem. The kimono is d...
