An outstanding antique Edo Period 1603 -1868 A.D. Japanese samurai kozuka knife handle, made of the blackened copper-gold alloy (shakudō). Exterior adorned with a finely executed gold and silver inlaid raised design of a riding bamboo horsewhip and a samurai commander's baton Saihai on the Nanako-Ji background pattern.

This is Edo period silk kinran, elephant and seahorse kaicyumono. What is kaicyumono (things in your pocket or pocket, especially wallets and paper cases) It's a very rare image pattern, and the metal fittings are auspicious seahorses. Slightly distorted shoe shaped - Kutsugata tea bowl with a rounded brim, made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part.

In the style of Oribe-Kuro bowls the bowl was covered with a black glaze which was not achieved by hikidashi (pulling the red hot bowl from the kiln) but by adding cobalt the the iron oxide glaze.

An Ancient wooden casket for Buddhist ritual implements lacquered black and decorated with lotus flowers in silver and gold on scrolling vines with an inscription beneath stating it was donated in the New Year of Kenmu 2 (1334). The lacquer, originally black, has oxidized to a mellow chocolate color. It is 33.5 x 18.5 x 13 cm (13 x 7-1/2 x 5 inches). Cup and saucer, both with a flower border in underglaze blue and a peony in the center. The exterior with a light Café-au-lait variation of the brown “Batavia” glaze (Batavia being the Dutch name for the VOC shipping harbour, today's Jakarta). Yongzheng, early 18th century, the base with a shop mark. Diameter of saucer "4 ½ / 11.5 cm, height of cup "1 2/3/ 4.3 cm. Condition: the cup with three chips to the rim and foot rim, two of them with old repairs (cf. pics).

A fine example of Edo period Kano painting, this generously proportioned hanging scroll illustrates a late autumn scene from the Japanese countryside over 300 years ago. The poem on the scroll reads:
