$500.00 Large Artist's Proof of Munjado Calligraphy by the Famous Kim Ki Chang aka Unbo (1913 - 2001). Despite being deaf, Unbo was one of Korea's most beloved 20th Century artists. His works are now sought by museums and collectors internationally. This is the original signed AP (Artist's Proof) of this large lithograph, where Unbo gives us a most creative rendering with anthropomorphic figures in the ancient style of figurative munjado calligraphy. 38.5 x 28.5 inches, 98 x 72.5 cm.

Height: 10.5 inches (27 cm). You can see a similar example in the 2005 exhibition catalogue, The Color and Shape of Celadon, plate 50, exhibited at the 3rd World Ceramic Biennale.

Korea, Koryo dynasty, 13th century.
The flattened globular sharply tapering to a raised ring foot, and sloping to a
narrow neck with everted cup-shaped mouth decorated in inlaid with white slip
with chrysanthemum floral heads between a double circular ring,
applied with a grey celadon glaze overall.
It’s in good condition, it measures 7.8cm d. x 4cm h.

The lower phoenix emerges from water as shown by a blossoming lotus. The rest of the space surrounding both birds is filled with robust peony blossoms of different color. Painted in rich mineral colors on paper. Later put into a custom lacquered wood frame.
The magical phoenix is called Bonghwang in Korea...

According to the Brooklyn Museum, these belt hooks in the form of a horse come from Lelang, one of three commandaries, or colonies, that the Chinese established in northwest Korea during the Han dynasty and that lasted more than four hundred years (108 B.C.E.–313 C.E.). The horse’s shape is reminiscent of depictions in the nomadic Scytho-Siberian culture of Central Asia...
