Its drawers pull open with sturdy iron "mokko" melon style handles with large incised backplates. Two drawers towards the bottom of the piece secure into place with a short locking bar. SOLD Antique Japanese suzuri bako, or calligraphy box, made from keyaki (zelkova) hardwood with hand-forged iron hardware. The top of the box is hinged with a large, shallow compartment. The front has two small drawers with iron rings pulls. This box would have once been used for storing ink stones and other calligraphy articles.

Ukiyo-e style images of fierce warriors and a demon appear in the two front paper blocks, and have kanji that has been cut from the tops. A beautiful maiden appears in the third block, while a large wave appears in the last, a nod to the famous woodblock artist Hokusai. Ouchi has created great depth with his techniques of color gradation, shading, and perspective. The piece is signed at the bottom in pencil, and numbered 5/60...

Behind the front door are six drawers with ring pulls. Two of the drawers are precious and small, one labelled in kanji. Outside is made of Hinoki wood (Cypress) while the inside drawers are made of Kiri wood (Paulownia). Dates from the Edo age 19th century.

Sold, Thank you! An early work featuring white walls in Autumn foliage by Kitamura Seigyu enclosed in the original signed double wooden box. The box appears to be titled HakuryuJi no yu (evening around Hakuryuji). There are many places named Hakuryuji in Japan, so it is difficult ot be specific, but near his home of Hokkaido, and a place he would have passed through is a Hakuryuji in mountainous and rural Akita prefecture...
