This is tsutsugaki textile from the Edo period. A design of lions and peonies in the midst of silent falling snow. It's not flashy, but it looks like a fusuma painting from the Edo period. Both the indigo dye and the cotton are from the Edo period, and they have a very nice texture. There is one slight repair mark on the upper left corner. A sample book of wa-sarasa (Japanese sarasa) with 106 fragments on 43 sheets of paper board, mostly made in Meiji period (1869~1912) and some from early Taisho period (1910s). Originally it has 45 sheets, but 2 (3rd and 20th) are lost. The dye techniques are katazome (stencil-resist-dye) and print. The book is published by Kyoto Shoin in Showa 42 (1967). The 4th among limited 60 issues. 27cm x 35cm x 5cm.

Shonai obi which is made in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It is handwoven of cotton yarn for warps and recycled washi (Japanese handmade paper) for wefts. Shonai obi with multicolor, with brown is special and all-natural dye, such as vegetable indigo and brown. Child's han-juban (short under kimono) made of silk with vegetable indigo dye shibori. Child's kimono is often remade from adult one and this one too. Lining is hand-spun cotton dyed with vegetable yellow, and collar belt is benibana (safflower) dye silk. In good condition except for a rip in the hem in the back. Floor cushion cover (zabuton-gawa) made of choma (ramie) whose warps and wefts are hand-plied. It has beautiful katazome (stencil-resist-dye) bamboo motif. The white ground katazome is called "Jishiro" which is rather rare than indigo ground one. It has also nice cloth with stripes for lining, whose warps are cotton and wefts are ramie.
