Beautiful long cloth with benibana dye (safflower dye) shibori pattern. In Edo period, benibana was grown in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district and traded to Kyoto in paste. It was very precious and used for luxurious kimono. This cloth might have been used for hem cloth for kaya (mosquito net) hung in the Japanese style room. Faded but in good condition. Woodblock printed book with 52 ancient designs for woven textiles. The painter is Takashima Chiharu (1777-1859), who was a Japanese style painter in late Edo period and belonged to Tosa faction. The original designs were painted in Kyoho 11 (1840) and this book was published by Anayama Tokutaro, who founded Yurindo in Meiji 7 (1874), from Yurindo around 1890. This is a Tsutsugaki yuzen day Kimono that was used in the Kyoto area during the Edo period. The landscapes and people are depicted in an idyllic style with the fine lines of Tsutsugaki. The colors are hand-painted with Yuzen-some. The fabric is made of cotton for the warp and tsumugi silk for the weft, giving it a rustic feel. There are no damages or stains.
