A boxwood netsuke depicting a toad climbing a circular stone millstone. The toad's wrinkled skin is meticulously engraved to create a realistic appearance. Mid-18th Century, Japanese Mixed Materials Three-case Inro, Kyoto ware Ojime, and Manju Netsuke This is Mid-18th Century, wonderfully carved Three-case Lacquered Inro inlaid with Porcelain. The inro is contained within a dark brown frame. The porcelain is inlaid in a Mokume bacground, and it depicts the figure of Lao-Tze on the front, and a couple of sages on the back. The white and brown Kyoto ware ojime depicts Daikoku, and is impressed with the seal of Eiraku Tokusen...

The netsuké represents the immortal Taoist Gama Sennin seated on a rock, his staff in his hand, at his feet his three-legged toad stretches affectionately towards him, trying to climb him. The artist sculpted his subject in a walrus tooth, the typical crystallization of dentin is visible under the base, in the center, the artist has partially hidden this crystallization by drilling multiple holes, simulating the defects of the rock, which are of the best effect...

It is 3.5 inches (9.8 cm) tall by 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) wide. Manju 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide. It is 96 gram.

A scarce and nicely formed bronze netsuke. The sculptural group depicts festival musicians playing a Taiko drum and Shinobue flute - the drum player with mask pulled back. Nicely detailed, down to the fingers and expressions of the musicians. The himotoshi is formed by the extended arm of one figure supporting the figure atop the Taiko. Edo period, 19th century. Good condition with rich, natural patina. Height, 1 5/8 inches
