Japanese Rare Ishikawa Fune Tansu. Full face as well as inside drawer fronts are made up of burl keyaki hardwood. Frame is 100% keyaki hardwood with kiri wood inside drawer construction. All edges are clad in hand forged iron for added protection. These are said to be made so well, that if the ship were to sink, this chest would float just below the surface for retrieval. This is a very rare and wonderful Japanese funa-dansu (sea chest for ship) example...

Antique pair of Japanese fusuma doors. Hand painted interior doors with solid hinoki Japanese cypress wood paneling. Painted of white, green, red, and brown natural pigments. Frames are lacquered red. Original metal pulls. Depicting blossoming chrysanthemums along with a sleeping white cat.

Antique Japanese futon storage tansu. Pair of large sliding door open up to two shelved inner storage compartment. Shelves are sturdy and can be removed easily. Two large and one small burl keyeki wood drawers at the bottom. Warm blond light tones. Hand forged iron hardware. Overall in excellent condition.

Japanese Room divider to create privacy in a large room. Carved in detail on both sides. Dragon and tiger are seen together balance together as representing the forces of the universe and the yin to those very forces.
On the flip side, three well carved heavenly flying apsaras are symbolized. Amounts the clouds, each angel is depicted holding there own instrument, sho flute, drum, biwa (four-stringed lute with a short neck) floating above blooming peonies...

The main body features 5 drawers of varying sizes where sewing accoutrements were stored. An antique Japanese Tansu chest known as a Gifu Choba Tansu in 2 sections made entirely of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original hand forged iron fittings and natural aged patina. Upper section has two sliding doors behind which business records and books were stored. The bottom section has 10 drawers of varying sizes, a pair of sliding doors and a hinged security door behind which hides 2 small drawers where valuables were kept...

An antique Japanese Buddhist temple altar offering table made entirely of Keyaki wood. Original bronze hard mounts used to reinforce the Japanese joinery. Removable top used to freshen the look of the table when burns from incense and candles affect its appearance. All sides of the table have a design taken from the Chinese 5th Century Tang Dynasty.

An Edo period kake-suzuribako (scroll calligraphy box). Iron hardware all in place. Lock face and key but lock works mostly gutted. Original tray with liner retained. Wood surface naturally distressed from use but with expected, even patina with all the accompanying charm. A smoothly finished zelkova (keyaki) may be used for the primary wood, and sugi (cedar) for the aromatic secondary wood. Length, 14 1/4 inches. Depth, 9 1/2 inches. Height, 9 3/4 inches.

An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal storage chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware and natural aged patina. Warabite style handles. One main drawer with two recessed drawers and a security door that hides two small drawers where valuables were stored. Constructed using straight dovetail Japanese joinery and hardened wood nails.

An antique Japanese Funa Tansu (ship chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia). All original hand forged iron hardware with a wiped lacquer finish. The front hinged security door opens to 5 drawers of varying sizes where ship documents, valuables and records were kept. Secret box hides behind and to the left of the bottom right drawer.

A well made and complex burl keyaki wood box of drawers and compartments. Compartments and drawers well suited to hold inkstone, colors, paper, brushes, works and accessories. Nice, handmade hinges and drawer hardware. Painted decoration of Shishi among peonies - nicely done in a charming, mingei (folk art) manner and likely by a previous owner of this kodansu. Late Edo period. There is expected wear from use, movement and checking of wood, and minor losses to the polychrome lacquer decoration...
