The outer wood frame is 32 x 9 x 27.5 cm (13 x 11 x 3-1/2 inches) and all is in excellent condition. The bell itself is suspended with deer leather and is 11.5 x 4 x 11 cm (4-1/2 inches diameter) and all is in excellent condition. Waniguchi are most commonly seen outside of Shrines, rung with a knot tied in a rope suspended from above...

The carefully crafted wood has a smooth surface with slight ripples that recall the typical wrinkled skin of amphibians. The eyes, inlaid in horn, give the toads a lively and attentive expression.
Harumitsu signature engraved on the base. Complete with box.
Period: Meiji late 19th century.
Dimensions: 14 x 15 x 15 cm.
Condition: Excellent. There is a small opening on the front of the wood.
Sculpture in varnished bamboo representing a toad.
The wood, before being carved, was attacked by xylophagous insects, which hollowed it out
by forming cavities. After treating and stabilizing the wood, the sculptor was able to use this
appearance to depict the toad's grainy skin: its skin is pustular.
In the Japanese bestiary, the toad occupies a special place, carrying positive values...

Condition: Excellent. There are natural ivory streaks on the face and on the base, partially retouched.

That this is signed Shochikusai indicates it was created before he took the family name in 1937. This square form of open vertical slats is a favorite of this artist.
