Large Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure (horse rider)

This unusual pottery figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) and would once have sat on the back of a large horse. It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a reddish-brown pottery. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of creamy-white on top of which have been applied black, red and pink pigments...

Pair of cast bronze cranes. The birds are fixed on rectangular bases, they carry a vase on their back and a ball in their beak. Sometimes these birds hold in their beak a flowering stem which ends in a candle holder, but here, examination with a magnifying glass reveals neither fracture nor grinding, it would seem that they are simply balls.Is this related to the funerary practice of placing a ball in the mouth of the deceased? A scholar must surely know what it is...

Superb little agate lotus design brush washer. Hand carved and polished natural color stone, it has russet/orange skin in the areas carved with curling edges and the design is complete with an incised center area and fully worked underside showing stems, pods, leaves and flowers. The surface polish is first rate and this is a very desirable piece. Includes original fitted hardwood stand. Dates late Qing to early Republic. Brusher measures 3.75" x 3". Height 1.5", On Stand Height 2.25"

19/20th C, finely rendered Chinese Shiwan (Shekwan) pottery statue of a seated man holding a bamboo pipe traditionally used for tobacco. Some nice crazing in the high gloss glazes on his shirt and pipe. This is a very good piece with excellent detailing, you won’t be disappointed. Measues 5.75” across, 7.5 deep, 6” high

Chinese Ming Dynasty Painted Pottery Mandarin Tile

This attractive pottery tile depicting a mandarin (Chinese official) was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It is made from a dense, quite highly-fired grey pottery. The mandarin wears a flowing robe, belted across his waist, with his badge of rank in the centre of his chest. In his right hand is what appears to be a hu (audience tablet). On top of the object held in his left hand sits a rabbit (or hare)...

Statue of Guanyu, the general of Liu Bei, which was transformed into the famous Guangong, the Taoist God of War. Guanyu is shown here in full military garb, with helmet and armor, sitting on an elevated throne. Votive box at the back, still closed. Wood, with remnants of superimposed painting, lacquering and gilding. China, 19th century. Height: 24.7 cm. Painting and lacquering partly flaked, otherwise very good condition.

Chinese scroll painting by Huang Zhou of two ladies writing on a black board. They are beautifully dressed in traditional garb.
Huang Zhou was born in 1925 in Hebei Province. He is famous for his naturalistic paintings of people and animals. After his schooling, he ventured deep into the border areas of China to paint the ethnic minorities there. The Muslim ladies in this painting are from Kashgar prefecture, southwest of Xinjiang...
