Mandarin ducks, a symbol of marital happiness, are depicted, as well as a phoenix (Fenghuang) and a peony plant, both symbols of immortality. It is reasonable to assume that this vase was given as a wedding gift. Marked below the double circle in underglaze blue. Good condition, no accidents or restorations. The gilding, which is almost always used on porcelain of this type, is in perfect condition here...

Good Cizhou type high fired, well balanced, ovoid soy glazed with russet highlights jar from a northern kiln, circa- Five Dynasties to Northern Song. There is a possible chip on the outer mouthrim (see enlargement)- difficult to tell if this happened after firing or before. There are remnants of kiln supports on the concave foot. This small porcelain jar was made during the 13th – 14th century, most likely at one of the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province.
