The bird and plant decoration is powdered with gold on a blown blue enamel background. Mandarin ducks, a symbol of marital happiness, are depicted, as well as a phoenix (Fenghuang) and a peony plant, both symbols of immortality. It is reasonable to assume that this vase was given as a wedding gift. Marked below the double circle in underglaze blue. Good condition, no accidents or restorations. Good Cizhou type high fired, well balanced, ovoid soy glazed with russet highlights jar from a northern kiln, circa- Five Dynasties to Northern Song. There is a possible chip on the outer mouthrim (see enlargement)- difficult to tell if this happened after firing or before. There are remnants of kiln supports on the concave foot. H: 9.6cm/3.8in and D: 10.3cm/4in.
