This large and extremely rare stoneware jar of very attractive form was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) or possibly the early part of the following Ming Dynasty, most likely at one of the kilns in Yuxi, Yunnan province. Well modeled figure of Bodhidharma in stoneware with a whitish celadon glazed body. Depicted as an itinerant monk with hat and walking staff, with large earrings and beaded necklace and flowing robe. Unglazed base with brownish-grey color to clay body. Very good condition.

A beautifully modeled white ware spouted ewer complete with original top. Elegant and intact, this piece measures 9-1/2" in height, with the top in place. The color is difficult to capture accurately, as there is the faintest hint of pale celadon color in the glaze. No repairs or restoration, no flaking of the glaze. A beautiful example of this early ware.

A Chinese Shiwan stoneware fanghu vase with a jun glaze, late Ming/early Qing dynasty. The hollow tube handles associate this type of vase with the arrow game pastime but this example, given the small diameters involved would be unsuitable. The glaze is a transmutation glaze and its colour is decided by the kiln conditions at the peak temperature.

Shiwan (Shekwan) ceramics are from southern China, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
