Large late Qing dynasty Guangxu period lidded porcelain ginger jar decorated in underglaze blue against a faint bluish-white background with four “shuangxi” symbols (indicating double-happiness and wedded bliss) surrounded by a stylized pattern of pencil style scrolling sweet pea flowers and vines (symbolizing “many children”). A bud forms the finial. The interior and base are glazed but the foot rim and mouth are unglazed...
Diameter approximately 41 cm.
There is a chip at the rim, not visible behind it and has been fixed. In good condition.
Rare Chinese Northern Song / Jin Dynasty Twin-Handled Jar
This rare and unusual jar was made at one of the northern kilns during the 11th - 13th century. It is coated both inside and out in a thick glaze that varies in colour from chocolate-brown to black. Late 19th century, made by Samson of Paris in a rather unusual Yongzheng style. Height with cover "5 ½/ 14 cm, diameter of cover "6 ¼ / 16 cm.
