A small Chinese yixing clay teapot of a dark brown tone, with a wide flattened body on rounded tripod feet. The lid and handle are thin and looped and the spout is shortened. The underside of the lid and very bottom are signed Gu Jingzhou (1915-1996). Size: 2" H x 4.25" L x 3.5" W

A green and yellow soapstone carving entitled "Lion Building" (located in Shandong province) depicting a scene from the famous Song dynasty legend the The Water Margin ("Shui Hu Zhuan") in which Wu Song fights with and kills Ximen Qing who had previously killed Wu Song's brother so as to 'acquire' his wife. This item is carved in a style which was popular during the Cultural Revolution period (1966-1976) but the subject matter (and the fact that the carving bears the signature of the artist)...

Beautifully carved soap stone figure of sage Fulushuo, he leans on an elaborately carved staff and hold the peach of longevity, on an intricately carved dark stone stand on which are carved a bat and a deer, also symbols of happiness and longevity, wonderful expression, stone of a lovely orange and green, Republic Period (circa 1910-1930). Total size: 20 3/4" high x 8" wide x 5 1/2" deep.

A small Guanyin / Guan Yin, moving graciously with ribbons and a fan, her hairdo with flowers and jewels. Chinese, early Republic period or somewhat earlier, carved in greenish speckled soapstone and fixed onto a rhombic hardstone stand. Height altogether "4 ¾ / 12 cm. Condition: piece of the ribbon near the right shoulder of the goddess is missing (cf. pics).

Chinese soapstone chop seal with three carved foo dogs standing on a pedestal. The carve work is beautiful and immaculate. The soapstone has a nice muted grey-green color with soft red and gold tone accents. The carved seal on the bottom has remnants of red pigment. Repulic period 20th century. Chinese soapstone pebble, beautifully carved with scene of three luohan (monks), one is standing with alms bowl outstretched out of which a cloud of mist rises and wraps to the reverse of the pebble, two bats fly over the bowl, surrounding the monks are rocks and low branches, lovely yellow and buff colors, on carved wooden base. Total size (on stand): 3 3/8" high

A Chinese seal, reddish-brown soapstone, all around with engraved little landscapes and a coiling snake on top. Chinese probably auspicious characters to one side. The name of the owner, Bettina, is carved both in Chinese and Latin lettering. Height "3 1/3/ 8.5 cm. Condition: fine.

Deity probably Taoist in soapstone. The god is standing, brandishing the Ying and the Yang. It must refer to a specific character and a story or legend. The work is finely executed and the style of the carving is unusual, cartoonish. In addition, the artist allowed himself to cheat by abnormally moving the left ear too close to the eye so that, seen from the front, the face is balanced. Like the columns of Greek temples which are bent to compensate for the optical effect or like certain porches ...
