A dry ink on paper image of mushrooms growing up along a garden stone dated 1874 by Tani Nyoi (1822-1905). The scene is signed Nyoisanjin, and dated the second month of 1874 hemmed in by origami cranes on cream satin in a field of rough pale green silk and features dark rosewood rollers. This is a wonderful set of Japanese bridal kanzashi (hair ornaments) from the Meiji to Taisho period, late 1800s to early 1900s, made out of tortoise shells. We assume that this kanzashi was decorated with the auspicious emblem, a phoenix bird in paulownia tree, with some elements (leaves, flowers and birds) altered to the family of the bride. This pair of earmuffs are kept together with a silk ribbon. Worn to protect the ears in winter, the outer side has delicate embroidered flower motif, and the inside is slightly padded and has ear pockets which slip of the ears.

Small Guangxu ink well, circa 1880's, dense, heavy and beautiful. It could also have been used as a small brush washer and doubled as a document or paper weight when not in use. In good condition it has a few nicks around the outer edge expected with a well used piece. Measures 3.25 wide x 1.25 high.

The forward section decorated with ruyi head shaped velvet. Blue cotton lining. Condition: patina, few loose and missing threads, two not embroidered areas with splits.
