This embroidery panel was originally the front bodice of a dress...Hand embroidered over several layers of heavy fabric and using mirrors and silver and gold metallic threads...this dress bodice was a show piece probably used only for important occasions i.e. weddings etc. Very ornately embroidered, this panel measures 19 x 22 inches.

From the writing, the pump was used in December, Meiji 7 (1874). Other writing states "Edo", most likely referring that the fire company was operating during the Edo Period and/or in the city of Edo, Japan. Xuantong 1909-1912, kaishu mark in regular script. Demonstrates clearly a feature that is often called hollow or fractured, line. The decoration of the piece, iron red bats among clouds is in a distinctly different style as compared to similarly decorated pieces of the previous reign.
