Large Chinese Neolithic Machang Painted Pottery Jar (Ex. Christie's)

This large pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It is a well-made jar of fine form and good proportions. At the waist of its wide body are two sturdy loop handles. At the top of its wide body is quite a narrow neck with a flared mouth.

A smokey swirling faceted vessel by master potter Nishihata Tadashi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yohen Tokkuri. A circular blank of pale gray shadow surrounded by raw burnt red clay gives way to a blanket of hazy ash. An exquisite slightly fluted porcelain bowl with a dragon parading though tendrils of cloud in raised relief by Mokusen enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 18.3 cm (7 inches) diameter, 9cm tall (3-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Mokusen was a prolific porcelain artist in Kyoto well known for his tea ware.
