Burmese manuscript containing rules for the correct performance of the monastic ritual, written in Pali language. Containing 16 palm leaves and two wooden cover boards, decorated in red lacquer and gilding. The folios are inscribed (fourteen on both sides) on a plain gilt ground with ink or lacquer in five lines, having small buildings to show punctuation. The boards and the backside of two leaves are decorated with floral roundels and lotus leaves...

Nice old red and black lacquered Cambodian Siri (betel) box container with foliate scroll pattern incised on the surface. Minor lacquer losses and restoration consistent with an antique piece. The art of Cambodian lacquer production has had a minor renaissance in recent years but this mainly done for the decorative art export market, items made for local village use this has pretty much died out after Khmer Rouge Era and advent of cheap Chinese plastic boxes...

Two rare Burmese/Shan small betel containers, 60 to 100 years old with “ku-nan kan byat” patterns and original inner trays. Genuine antique Burmese lacquer is almost impossible to find these days; I picked the larger one up in a small shop Luang Prabang, Laos in 1998. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and W: 10.2cm/4in, and the smaller one, H: 6.7cm/2.7in and D: 7.7cm/3in, in Chiang Mai this year. These have some old repairs, as well as a pleasing craclature typical of antique Burmese lacquer.

Exceptionally rare early 20th century small, complete betel box with za-yun pattern, emulating English embroidery stitching. There are some cracks on the lacquer surface as well minor losses on the edge (especially on the inner box) all visible in enlargements. This is a specialist’s collector piece, for real lovers of Burmese lacquer. H: 8.4cm/3.3in and D:11.6cm/4.4in

A elegant lacquerware for monastery use. Made in Kyaukka, in the lower Chindwin District in Burma, made from woven matting and coiled bamboo and lacquered in black and red. This piece has seven sections. These original Kyaukka pieces are difficult to come by. Size: H. 38cm. W. 40cm. Condition: All original. Some minor chips and one small piece re-glued on. See photo.

Burmese lacquered harp, or Saung, the body carved with gilt floral motifs and inlaid glass. The tip of the curved neck ends in a stylized gilt leaf with inlaid glass. The 14-stringed instrument sits displayed on a carved wood stand with temple guardians and lotuses.

A set of rare and complete Burmese manuscript (KAMMAVACA) made from thick cloth coated with gold and lacquer in nice condition. It was written in the Pali language using Burmese script. The square letters were written in thick and black cinnabar lacquer. This set has 16 leaves and 2 wooden covers made from teak wood. Each leave was inscribed on both sides with illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology on some leaves...

A very rare large gilded Royal Thayo receptacle created in Mandalay for Buddhist votive use. Thayo is made by mixing lacquer with sifted paddy husks to which pulverized bone is added for strength, resulting in a sort of plastic like material easily molded or stamped in a relief design. Size: H. 104 cm. 40.5 inches W. 44 cm. 17 inches. Condition: No repairs.

Burmese betel nut container, gilded relief work with glass insets. 17 cm high, 15 cm lid diameter. Undated, estimated to be late 19th/ early 20th century. generally good condition, some missing glass and crack in base. Can be viewed in central London and shipped worldwide.
