Enlargement 2 shows the upper part of the print in which the black background features a checkerboard pattern that only becomes visible in side light.

This young guy’s stuff is very chic; a sake set by Kato Yoshiyasu in purest white and darkest black, everything a dialog between shadow and form. Here the artist has used a combination of his repertoire. The cup is pure white dipped into black, the black then chiseled away in divots creating a beautiful pattern for the eyes and texture for fingers. An exquisite deep blue covers the dark iron-rich clay of this Shino Vase by Kato Toyohisa enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ash Purple “no” Glaze Vase. Kato Harutake (1886-?) Shino Ware Chawan (Tea Bowl) for Tea Ceremony

Kato Harutake is of the same lineage as Seto ware founder Kato Kagemasa (1168-1249), and was born into a family that passed down the name Kato Buemon from generation to generation. Kato himself inherited the title of Buemon VII.

Shino pottery is produced in today's Gifu prefecture since 16th century and it is distinguished by thick white glazes, red marks and the surface of small holes.
