A mid Edo period carved woodn mask for Shishi-mai festival dance covered in red and black lacquer with gilded teath and eyes in rarely seen good condition. Very interesting himotoshi that starts in the back of the Sennin and exits on the left side of his body (see photo #8)...

Antique Japanese scroll painting of a horse, done in sumi ink, its legs kicked up into the air. Very disciplined calligraphy brush work is used, and may have been executed by a Zen Buddhist monk. This horse painting was possibly cut down from a larger screen and mounted as a scroll.

Arabesque with flowers at the center, 3 chinese phenixes, 6 dragons are pictured around with fine brush strokes and octopus arabesque with blue glaze. The artist has chosen a softer than traditional approach to the tree bark, almost boneless, all written with washes of dark color like that of the Rimpa school. A pair of bottle-shaped heishi vases made for tribute to the gods emblazoned with the characters Dai-Kichi (Great Fortune) by Imamura Joen (1635-1717) signed on the base and enclosed in a wooden collectors box. They are 20.5 cm (8 inches) tall each and in excellent condition.

Brilliantly colored riders charge into rushing water on the gold leaves of this 18th century six panel screen relating the famous charge at the Battle of Uji Bridge. Tatsuna and Kagesue charge forward into the waters riding toward the enemy lined up on the opposite shore of the Uji River; the skeleton of the bridge visible in the back-ground. The screen measures 173 x 377 cm. (68 x 148-1/2 inches) each and retains the original Edo backing paper, with strong hinges and a good brocade border...
