A pair of Japanese Imari porcelain dishes. A later example with Namban (or Nanban - Southern barbarian) subject "Black Ship" dishes. The decoration in the Imari palette depicting Portuguese figures and their famed trading ship, that between Japan and China. Good condition. Showa period, probably mid 20th century. Dimensions: Diameter about 10 inches, Height about 1 3/8 and 1/14 inches respectively.

Wonderful wood-fired Shigaraki ceramic vase. Natural markings and glazes have created a masterpiece. Stamp on bottom but we couldn't read. Ca.1960. 8" tall x 6" diameter. Ask for shipping quote.

Early postwar Japanese oil painting on canvas, 'Town of Wakamatsu', May, 1952, by Ueno Haruka (1896-1978), 53 x 45.5 x 2 cm (20.86 x 17.91 x 0.78in), probably as a rare scene of vibrant retro local market street of Wakamatsu in Kita-Kyushu region well-known for the biggest domestic coal shipping port at that time...

A narrow open-mouthed vessel decorated with autumnal trees by Ito Tozan II enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The piece could serve as a vase, but comes with a black lacquered wooden lid and is titled Mizusashi, making it rightfully a fresh water jar for the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It is 11.7 cm (4-3/4 inches) diameter 22 cm (9 inches) tall and in excellent condition, likely dating from the 1950s...

A large vase decorated with an expansive ancient pine by Kawamoto Rekitei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 27 cm (10-3/4 inches) diameter, 29 cm (11-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Kawamoto Rekitei was born in Aichi prefecture, home of Seto-yaki and a long standing important production center for Japanese Sometsuke porcelains...

This is a beautiful Japanese wedding gown (Uchikake) in high quality; it is soft but hangs well. This wedding gown looks more like a Noh costume. The colors are deep purple and light green in a gold background. The gold is not as shiny as shown in the photos unless it is placed under a bright light. The gown was made in the famous Nishijin textile district of Kyoto, Japan and the gown in this quality is very difficult to find in today's market...

This is a striking Japanese uchikake, wedding gown. The design on this gown is the sacred pine tree, “Yogo no Matsu”, and golden clouds. Pines in gold or gold clouds are often painted on silk screens or used as the background for a noh play stage. The wall paintings in the Kyoto Nijo castle, Kyoto, which were painted by Kano, Tanyu (1602-74) when he was in his mid 20s, are quite famous.

There is no visible image of God in Shinto religion, the oldest form of religion in Japan...

Beautiful hand painted (dyed) iris on soft 100 percent silk. Some designs are dyed to be matched for the wider width. This is probably from mid Showa, 40 to 60 years old, no color loss. The spots and the design that run sideway are part of the woven design. Full roll and good quality silk. I will get the measurement.

This is a superb Bunraku puppet of the historical figure Minamoto Yoshitsune, one of the lead characters from the Tale of the Heikei and legendary fighter in Japan. The doll is incredibly mobile. Head moving up and down, his eyes open and close and move left to right. His eyebrows can be raised and lowered, and mouth opened or closed, all from toggles inside his kimono on the extended neck piece...

There is incredible detail in all aspects of this huge bronze sculpture of a jacketed monkey and his elder handler resting on a bronze base signed Shojun (also read Katsunori), dating from the mid 20th century (1935-1965). Taking a break between performances, the aged man pulls out his pipe and tobacco pouch, his wizened countenance seeming as if speaking some soothing words to the creature, perhaps otsukare-sama. A chain runs from his wrist to a collar around the animals neck...

A male peacock struts proudly before a gorgeous plume of color on this mid 20th century hand painted screen signed and stamped Yushin. The colors are slightly muted, in a typical Japanese way, the background awash in mottled silver-gray, presenting the brilliant greens and blues of the birds fabulous attraction. It is bordered in a wooden frame covered in Negoro lacquer, unusual green over red, matching the painting perfectly...

The color of this Japanese wedding gown (Uchikake kimono) is a deep cherry to scarlet red depending on the lighting. Please note the beautiful embroidery work on this gown, especially on the sleeves.

The kiku flowers crowd over the gold lattice with multiple colors of green leaves. Cranes, which symbolize family in Japan, fly over the plum and pine trees in the sky. In the designs of the lower half, there are flower carts and the seven wild flowers from autumn...

Beautiful hand painted Fukagawa Vase from Arita, Japan. It has a landscape of rural scenary of Japan on a matte finish. Fukagawa company is well known for translucent white porcelain. The under glazed blue signature at the bottom reads "made by Fukagawa" and there is an artist's signature on the lower half of the vase. Mint condition, circa mid 1900, 9 1/4" in diameter and 6 3/4" tall.

A stylish cloisonné (shippo) beaker vase by Ando, 10” in height, circa 1950 – 1970. It has the original box with a pamphlet issued by the Ando Cloisonne Company, the leading cloisonné company in Japan. The note briefly introduces the company, how their cloisonné are made (with photos) and a photo of the very famous enameled mirror discovered in *Shoso-in.

*The Shoso-in was originally the storehouse of the Todaiji temple...

Fine Japanese cloisonne box and tray by Ando of Nagoya. The Ando company, established in Nagoya in 1880, is the only cloisonne remaining workshop in Japan originating from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) that is still active in the creation of cloisonne enamels. They retain the highly esteemed distinction of being appointed by the Imperial Household.
