A kakemono presenting an example of calligraphy by Shunsui Rai, 1743 ~ 1813. Shunsui was a Confucian scholar of some influence in the Hiroshima district and an historian. He is the father of Sanyo Rai, 1781~1832, who also became a notable calligrapher and a painter and scholar.

Overall the dimensions are 170cm x 36cm. The picture size is 91cm x 25cm. The scroll ends are rosewood. Good condition overall with just minor horizontal creases noted...

The size of bowl: 6 7/8" Dia x 2 1/8" Very unusual Japanese Ko Imari Porcelain Namasu Bowl. The bowl has the design of flower motif in the center with bamboo leaves around. The side wall has two windows of phoenix bird and tropical plants. Bewteen them, gold Karakusa and spider mums design in gold and red. Very well painted. An antique Japanese Gyosho Tansu also known as a merchant peddler's chest made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. Five drawers behind the hinged front door and a sixth drawer below the door. The sides have upper iron cord holding rings and cord holes at the bottom which allowed the merchant to carry this tansu on his back while transporting his wares. All original hand made iron hardware.

This amber Raku chawan was made in late Edo Period (1800-1868). Raku pottery is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremony since as early as the 16th century. An antique Japanese Matsumoto Kimono Tansu made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. All original hand made iron fittings including stylized Mokko handles with unusual front drawer corner decorative plates. Each side has its main swivel carrying handles where a bamboo pole slipped through and two attendants on each side would easily transport this chest. The two lower hand handles would be used to position and place the tansu. Two small drawers hide behind the hinged door...

Juban (under kimono) made of three kinds of silk cloth. One is silk crepe with yamamayu (wild silk) stripes and the other is silk crepe with stripes. The third one is tsumugi (pongee silk) with katazome komon (stencil-resist-dye small pattern). All natural dyed. Yamamayu (wild silk) is rare and precious comparing with cultured silk. It is hardly dyed, so that it stands out shiny when woven together with silk crepe. It is sewn with very fine choma (ramie) thread so that it is rather old...

Antique Japanese firman's jacket, hakeshibanten, cotton indigo dyed with sashiko stitching and freehand paste resist decoration (tsutsugaki). Middle back of jacket with round mon holding the red colored hiragana character "ha". Even wear overall.

Both original finish and hand made iron fittings including the Kakute handles. Likely a specially commissioned custom made chest by a wealthy individual or family. Unusual features include the sliding three door design of cranes and bamboo, the carved decorative base and the triangular hardened wooden nail construction.
