A Tsuiki Jippo Cloisonne Enamel Writing Box (Suzuribako), 
Ando Company, early 1930’s .

The box is formed from heavy gauge copper, the lid decorated with tsuiki-jippo enamels in relief on a raised design of a Shinto shrine in a wooded setting, a Torii and lantern also present. The interior has been applied with a coarse cloth lacquered with both clear and red lacquer in an abstract design and contains a hardwood tray with fitted inkstone and tsuiki-jippo water-dropper...

An Ai-Kutani plate, Arita circa 1700. Decorated in underglaze blue with various molluscs amongst seaweed clad rocks. The back is plain with three spur marks within the foot-rim. Overall the glaze has a blue tinge.

A fine Japanese porcelain plate, the centre painted with a pair of Ho-o birds perched on rocks amongst flowers. There are several versions of this design featuring different borders. This border is unusual, it features three Ming-style elephant headed dragons and a profusion of blooms. The back has a particularly delicate depiction of trailing blooms and an inner border of clouds. The mark is associated with the Old Kakiemon kiln, 1680’s.

Approximately 20.7cm diameter...

This is a phrase coined by the Edo period Confucian scholar Dazai Shundai in his treatise on The Purple Grass Garden (Shishienko)...

The vintage old cloth, which has been repaired and used many times and has faded, is a wonderful work of art in itself and can be enjoyed on both sides.
