Rare early 20 century Kutani ware Shunga Sake cup with old box

Kutani Ware has been produced near Kaga mountain in Ishikawa prefecture of Japan from as early as 17 century.
Kutani porcelain can be characterized by rich overglaze enamels and beautiful hand-painted motifs.

Small, sturdy platter, called ishizara, used as kitchen ware. Gray stoneware decorated with underglaze iron black and cobalt blue tama (sacred jewels) and characters, covered by a creamy, yellowish translucent and finely crackled glaze. Five spurmarks. Mingei.

Rustic round platter with wide rim, called ishizara in Japanese, used in kitchens and commoners’ households. Pale yellow glaze that typically leaves the foot free, turning a pale pink and then dark in the center. The plate is slightly warped, as is common with ishizara.

An antique Japanese Kadai (natural wood display stand) used for Ikebana flower arranging as well as an accent stand to display precious objects. Made of burl Hinoki (Cypress) from near the roots of the tree trunk. A beautiful Peacock open train pattern emerges from the wood grain.

An antique Japanese Tansu chest called Todana made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Hikute style handles with an Urushi lacquer finish. Two sliding doors open to a storage area with a removable shelf where books were stored. Five drawers below provide additional storage and function.

Uchishiki which is one of temple decorations put under the altar. This one is made of "hangiri" (pants), which is one of No costumes. It is made of blue ground silk satin with "hiun and uroko" (flying cloud and fish scale) design with gold treads. It has kanji letters "Meiji 5 (1873)"in the back, however it is the date when it was dedicated, so the age of the cloth might have been from late Edo period. Vermillion lacquered gourd confectionery bowl (Kashiki) made by Ishikawa artist Maehata Harusai, the 3rd.
Elegant rounded shape with color contrast gives a graceful appearance.

The bowl was exhibited at Mitsukoshi Art Club in 2012 in "Tea Ceremony Lacquering Thirty Years - Harusai Maebata Exhibition".

Naoki Kojima Karatsu Black Plum Flower Guinomi (sake cup)

Ceramics artist Kojima Naoki (b. 1962) works in Sogen Kiln located in the town of Karatsu creating his pieces entirely from earth and natural colours.

Naoki Kojima opened a Karatsu ceramics store at the age of 18.
Held first single exhibition at 21 and decided to pursue ceramics. Later he opened his own studio and a kiln.
His areas of specialty are Chosen Karatsu, Kairagi, and Iro Chawan...

A beautiful vessel / seashell Kara of organic shape with a sideways, seedpod opening in mat mottled turquoise glaze producing a feeling of underwater ambiance. The rest of outer body and the side, elongated shell is done with his usual technique of grooving the surface with needles and rubbing iron into the grooves resulting in those great dark brown and white lines.
