This is a stunningly beautiful Hakata ningyo (doll) made by a Hakata ningyo artist. It is not one of the mass produced Hakata dolls. The softness of the colorings and detail in her kimono (in Kyoto Yuzen dye) did not fully come out in the photos. This doll was modeled after oiran, a courtesan from the Edo period, or we may simply call her Genroku bijin (a beautiful woman from Genroku era in Edo)...

Fine Meiji Period (circa 1870) Bunraku Puppet of a Sambaso Dancer. This rare puppet is operated by three Puppet Masters, who make it come to life to present a magical theatrical experience. He is carved of wood and covered with Gofun. He wears a rich blue and red robe with white under robe, and his head is adorned with a gold and black velvet hat. An embroidery Crane graces his back. The bells on his feet sound when he dances. 35 inches (89cm) height.

This very fine Late 18th Century Ningyo was made for the Daimyo Class. These rare pieces are highly regarded in Japan. This is an unusually large Musha- Ningyo of the hero Kato Kiyomasa, who accompanied Hideyoshi on his campaign against Korea. He was famous for his bravery. He has a great face of carved wood and finely burnished Gofun, and is dressed in the sumptuous textiles of a rich green velvet coat with gold dragons...

A fine Late 19th Century (circa 1880) Meiji Period Gosho Ningyo of Momotaro the Peach Boy, based on a famous Japanese legend. This beautiful Gosho is elaborately detailed and fully armored, holding a banner with peach finial. The peach symbol appears several times on this magical Gosho. His wonderful face expresses his nobility. Carved entirely of wood and covered with highly burnished Gofun. 13 inches (33cm) height.

Antique Japanese hair ornaments, Gin(Silver) Kanzashi with bira-bira danglings. This is an unusually large and heavy Kanzashi probably worn by Geisha. It was made for a very special occasion when a particularly elaborate hair style was needed. The ornaments are all made with silver and the bodies are plated on mixed metals. 16 petals chrysanthemum heads. This one is definitely for Kanzashi collector. Shorter one is tarnished more than the other

Finely crackled which glaze covers this late Meiji Chinese inspired form clearly stamped inside the footring Tozan Ito Tozan. There is an incredible sense of mastery in the concise lines and perfectly sculpted form. It is 13 inches (33 cm) tall, 10 inches (26 cm) diameter and in excellent condition, enclosed in an older custom made wooden box.

This baluster form vase is quite large by Japanese standards at 14 inches (35 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Chrysanthemums decorate the sides in rich, dark blue. There is a slight yellow tinge to the white glaze. It is signed on the base Makuzu Kozan Sei. The name Kozan was granted by Prince Yasui-no-Miya in 1851 in honor of the tea ware produced during the later Edo for the imperial Court by the tenth generation head of the Kyoto pottery family Miyagawa Chozo...

A very unusual pale yellow-green (kiji) porcelain vase in the shape of a Chinese Gu by Seiji Celadon master Suwa Sozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Fretwork and a roiling dragon body have been softly engraved into the sides; the slightest variation in tone the only hint to the subtle design-work. Antique Japanese inro, makie designs of phoenix (ho-o bird) on black lacquer. These large inro are sometimes referred to as sumo wrestler's inro, written "Kahei nuri". The last letter (kao like) is probably "nuri" which means painted or coated with. To roughly quote the Wrangham Index of Inro Artists – according to Soken Kisho, Kahei was a mysterious makie artist that lived in Kyoto during the 18th century. A Karatsu style shuhai sake cup with cream glaze decorated inside and out by the Zen Priest Nakahara Nantenbo, a priest who was instrumental in reviving the Zen tradition in the beginning of the 20th century. Circling the circumference is a seven character inscription, the first six reading Kaisei Fugetsu O Kan, the last we have not been able to read.
