This impressive han-tsutsu Shino chawan was made by the late 13th generation Mino potter Kato Seizo (1930-1979, Kagekiyo). Kato’s works are well-regarded throughout Japan and he has won a number of honors and awards over the course of his career as an artist. Charming Antique Japanese box with large lid, lacquered red and black with mother of pearl inlay. Black lacquer mon of pine tree and writing in black, heavy iron hardware. Has original holes for tying top to bottom for travel. The inscription on both sides state the name of the confectioner. Trans: Confectioners Matsuzaka Asano Rokkado. Late Edo Period- Meiji Period (19th century). Size: 17" high x 16" wide x 13 1/2" deep.

A wide hira-jawan decorated with inlaid white slip in the pattern of flowers and rope. The Mishima style of pottery is modeled after much earlier Korean forms—most notably Punch'ŏng. The gold repairs are extensive and skillfully applied, nicely complimenting the pale ash glaze and adding an extra dimension to this lovely work.

This piece is 5.6 inches in diameter (14.3 cm) and stands 2.3 inches tall (5.9 cm)...

Charming original blond Ko (small) tansu with locking bar and safe (with Key). Many drawers of different sizes with great original black iron hirsute shaped drawer hardware. This is finely carved, Late 19th century, Japanese Netsuke depicting a jovial looking Entertainer who is making music with a Hand Drum that he is holding in his hands, and Fan looking instrument that he is working with his feet. Excellent form and detail on this piece. It is signed Yoshiyuki in a rectangular reserve posted over the man's rear end...

Antique Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake). Made of beautiful silk brocade originally intended for an obi. Gold and green with woven pattern of pine, bamboo and chrysanthemums. The lining is sewn of red silk and the hem is padded. Meiji Period. Size: 61" high x 47 1/2" wide (sleeve to sleeve).

In the shape of a Sennin (Immortal). H. 10 cm. Very good age wear and patina. Repaired at the feet.

A cloisonne box with a beautiful enameled phoenix signed by the artist. The box comes with it's original tray and has the original cloth lining inside the box. Size: Box. L.14cm. W. 10cm. H. 8.5cm. Tray: 21 X 17.5 cm. Condition: No repairs.

The natural ash glaze gradates from a light-glossy grey on one side to a blueish grey on the other. The foot of the bowl is unglazed at the base and shows traces of ferrous-rich clay in the form of an orangish hue. The mouth of the piece is somewhat oblong giving it an attractive shape and the rough texture and ash deposits in places give this bowl a weighty presence...

Special offer: Heavily distorted shoe shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl with a strongly flaring mouth made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potters knife in its lower part and covered with a very deep black iron oxide glaze inside and outside.

A 'window' on the side has been left unglazed and is decorated with a square divided into two white and two black section accompanied on each side by two circles with the same patterns...

Antique Japanese scroll painting on silk, of a lone black bird perched on a blossoming branch. Signed with seal of possible artist, Kano Tanen. The name is 淡淵 (alternate form for the 2nd character: 渕).

We present another awesome Shino-Oribe Chawan from our collection: Greyish-whithe glaze amalgamates with a wild and roughly thrown body and a still vivid and strong glaze. It is very heavy for a tea bowl, almost 500g. Please note that there is also an interesting kiln mark.

The chawan dates from the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and comes with a very good wood box.

Japanese Meiji period cast iron tetsubin in lotus form with a Chinese inscription dating 1702 on one petal. The inscription reads “Kangxi forty-second year, 9th month, 6th day, auspicious day made.” Lotus form lid. Measures about 8 1/4” in length by 4 3/4” high (8” including handle). 19th century. Very good overall condition. The handle can stand upright, but it does not balance easily. There is rust to the interior. From a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
