This is a Japanese antique Boro Tattered Material a rare and hand-spun natural Shina-fu Linden fabric with dark brown. It is an rare old meiji period (1868-1911)fabric. It is a thick and rough. Shina-fu Linden is a deciduous tree native to northern temperate regions. Elm and linden cloth naturally turn darker brown as time passes, due to the tannin content in these tree fibers. There is dirt and repair marks. The rag that has been used many times and discolored is an art in itself...

The body and back are silk safflower dyed shibori(Tie-dyeing) . The collar and lining are cotton. The fabric on the collar is a very nice Edo period cotton. Antique Japanese light summer kesa (Buddhist Priest's vestment). Made with a sheer layer of black silk embroidered with silver crayfish medallions and lined with white silk.

Often described as a mantel or robe, the kesa is worn draped diagonally over the left shoulder and under the right armpit. Meant as a reminder of the Buddha's own simple patched garment, kesa are formed from many fragments of cloth...

Baby's ceremonial kimono made of asa whose warp and weft are hand-plied. It looks choma (ramie) than taima (hemp), however it is not proven till it is looked by a microscope. Child's or baby's kimono was recycled from adult's and so did this one. It has some stains. The folded seam in the body is unseamed. The second half of the 19th century. 96cm x 115cm
