A gorgeous Jubako stacking box of lacquered wood decorated with burgeoning grape vines in powdered gold maki-e dating from the 19th century enclosed in the original wooden storage box. Inside oxidized vermilion grants a sense of celebration, while the outside covered in polished black is the perfect back drop to the shimmering gold decoration. Assembled it is 24 x 26 x 31 cm (9-1/2 x 10-1/4 x 12 inches). Overall it is in very good condition, with some minor dings in the edges typical of use...

Small Japanese circular covered box in gold nashiji and maki-e lacquer with the lid having a lovely display of iris flowers in a stream setting created in both low and raised relief lacquer work The sides also feature raised delicate designs that complete this perfect little box. In excellent antique condition, it measures 2-1/2" diameter and 1-7/8" high. Dates Late Edo or Early Meiji and a piece worthy of a collector.

A lacquer box decorated with a Rimpa style thatched house under blossoming tree by Kamisaka Sekka dating from the late Taisho period. A 1920's Wakasa lacquer clam trinket box. Both sides match and the two pieces fit together perfectly. Dating from the 1920's, it measures 4.75" across, 2.25" high, 3.75" front to back. Wakasa craftsman developed the process of layering lacquer coats of different colors during the Edo period.

On a black lacquer ground slightly raised decoration showing a landscape with rockwork and trees in different gold lacquer techniques. A rare small sized circular Hokai container with chased brass hardware decorated on the lid with a six layer 16 petal chrysanthemum, the floral symbol of the Imperial Household. The container is made of wood covered with black lacquer decorated with gold powder hira-maki-e with brass hardware. Hokai were a standard accoutrements to any household of means, however this size is quite rare. It is not the miniature version from a doll set...

Very refined Japanese lacquered wood tray representing a branch of plum blossoms and bamboo leaves in gold and brown lacquer. The decor is placed on a brown base in the style of a basket weave. The back is in black lacquer (ro-iro). The protective wooden box is original and signed on the lid and inside. Dimensions: 10 x 18 cm. Period: Meiji (1868-1912) 19/20th century.

A elegant and luxurious cigarette set by Ikkakusai, Nagata Tomijiro. The work is a combination of silver, woven strips of wood, and lacquer. The exterior section of the lid has two fan shaped silver plates insets with traditional motifs of bamboo, lingzhi (reishi), and the sage jurojin. The box has a metal and glass ash tray, a compartment for a lighter, and below a drawer for extra cigarettes. Cigarettes became popular in Japan during the Taisho and early Showa Periods...

A set of seven Zohiko covered soup bowls. Colorful leaf decoration sparsely applied on black ground with almost iridescent effect with gold and silver maki-e and red details. Zohiko marks in silver lacquer inside the bowls' foot rims. 20th century. Bowl diameter s about 4 11/16 inches (11.9 cm). Excellent condition. Antique Japanese gold lacquer inro with a scene of a waterfall on one side and a sage on the other. The water crashes around rocks where chrysanthemums blossom. On the reverse, a sage sits among the flowers at the base of the falls. The inro case has 4 compartments with interiors covered in a dense nashiji lacquer. The ojime is made of red lacquer and is carved with a dragon. The netsuke is made of boxwood and carved in the shape of a seed pod...
