Sold, Thank you! A cormorant cries out to the sea on the lid of this fantastic suzuri bako writing box enclosed in a red lacquered kiri-wood box. Inside the birds mate looks up from among gold flecked lotus leaves growing wild along the waters edge. The box contains the original tray with stone, the edges of which are flecked with gold. It is in excellent condition but for on ding to the inside of the base, lower left, and one in roughly the same position on the lid...

A gorgeous Jubako stacking box of lacquered wood decorated with burgeoning grape vines in powdered gold maki-e dating from the 19th century enclosed in the original wooden storage box. Inside oxidized vermilion grants a sense of celebration, while the outside covered in polished black is the perfect back drop to the shimmering gold decoration. Assembled it is 24 x 26 x 31 cm (9-1/2 x 10-1/4 x 12 inches). Overall it is in very good condition, with some minor dings in the edges typical of use...

$650.00 Small Japanese circular covered box in gold nashiji and maki-e lacquer with the lid having a lovely display of iris flowers in a stream setting created in both low and raised relief lacquer work The sides also feature raised delicate designs that complete this perfect little box. In excellent antique condition, it measures 2-1/2" diameter and 1-7/8" high. Dates Late Edo or Early Meiji and a piece worthy of a collector.

sold, with thanks! A lacquer box decorated with a Rimpa style thatched house under blossoming tree by Kamisaka Sekka dating from the late Taisho period. It is 12.5 x 12.5 x 6 cm (5 x 5 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition. An identical box which was part of the permanent collection of the Ruth and Sherman Lee Institute along with the original design sketch is visible on page 154 of the book Kamisaka Sekka: Rimpa Master - Pioneer of Modern Design published by the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art in 2003...

SOLD A 1920's Wakasa lacquer clam trinket box. Both sides match and the two pieces fit together perfectly. Dating from the 1920's, it measures 4.75" across, 2.25" high, 3.75" front to back. Wakasa craftsman developed the process of layering lacquer coats of different colors during the Edo period.

A fine Japanese incense burner, made of wood with pierced gilt copper lid, the interior with copper lining. On a black lacquer ground slightly raised decoration showing a landscape with rockwork and trees in different gold lacquer techniques. Condition: please look at the photos carefully, traces of age and usage, few small lacquer losses, rim with two cracks, lid slightly distorted. Dimension: c. 8.4 cm high, c. 4.8 cm long and wide.

sold, thank you A rare small sized circular Hokai container with chased brass hardware decorated on the lid with a six layer 16 petal chrysanthemum, the floral symbol of the Imperial Household. The container is made of wood covered with black lacquer decorated with gold powder hira-maki-e with brass hardware. Hokai were a standard accoutrements to any household of means, however this size is quite rare. It is not the miniature version from a doll set...

The exterior section of the lid has two fan shaped silver plates insets with traditional motifs of bamboo, lingzhi (reishi), and the sage jurojin. The box has a metal and glass ash tray, a compartment for a lighter, and below a drawer for extra cigarettes. Cigarettes became popular in Japan during the Taisho and early Showa Periods...
