A serving tray made of Kozai (Jap. old material) from Todaiji Temple in Nara branded with the marks of the 7 great temples of Nara and enclosed in the original wooden storage box dated 1925. It is turned from keyaki, a hardwood in the elm family famed for durability and beautiful wood grain. Japanese hair comb decorated with a pair of love birds, Oshidori (Mandarin ducks) perched on a plum tree, raised gold makie with silver, kirikin and shells. The theme here is auspicious. We counted 33 teeth in 3 cm, amazingly skillful hand work. Excellent condition - actual color loss in the center area of wooden teeth is not so obvious as shown in the photos. Quality, Japanese lacquered wood kimono hanger. The hanger comes in the box with the old tissue paper inside. The writings on the box and the tissues (old with lots of storage stains - appeared new in the photos) indicate that it was "Made by Wajima", pre WWII. Wajima lacquer has been know for the best for it's superior quality. Very light (kiri wood inside?). Taisho to early Showa, 1920 to 1940. Mother of pearl is inset into the silver powder dusted lattice set between red lacquered pillars forming this art-deco era lacquer vase enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Iwamura Sadao (1912-1944). A brass insert which rests perfectly between the four corners allows for flowers. The strong geometric patterning embodies the Art Deco style so popular in Japan in the 1930s.
