A small wall hanging in Togidashi maki-e surrounded by a checkerboard pattern of polished Suzu-ita metal squares by Okada Yuji dating from the mid 1970s. The Togidashi technique requires the artist to create a design in Maki-e, then cover the design entirely in a layer of lacquer, polishing the lacquer through to reveal the image below. This stunning box features a pair of Peacocks by a stream with auspicious Flowers and Butterflies rendered in high relief of gold lacquer and accents of mother of pearl. An Edo period incense burner of wood cut in a squash shape known as an Akoda-koro covered in black lacquer with designs of aogai-shell laid onto the surface under a solid silver dome-lid. It is 11 cm (4-1/2 inches) diameter and enclosed in modern custom wooden storage box. There are losses to the raden design revealing the underlying tonoko on which it is laid.

An unusual Japanese circular wooden stand with black and red lacquer finish, the edges of the stand are inlaid with shell, standing on slight cabriole tripod feet.
