Shiro Satsuma (White Satsuma) ware sake decanter shaped in the form of a turtle. In Japanese, the word asobi may be translated as playful where the tail is stylized in the shape of a handle and the lid to the decanter is using one of the hexagonal piece of the back of the turtle. The decanter comes with a box. The underside of the lid contains an inscription: (translation) During the 17th year of Meiji (1884) , the piece was a gift from Mr. Habu and has been treasured since. An antique Bizen ware figure of Daikoku, one of the seven fortune gods in Japan. Daikoku is holding a mallet (uchide kozuchi) which Daikoku often holds. On the other hand, he is holding a two legged radish. The word radish in Japanese, daikon, is somewhat synonymous to Daikoku and a legend exist of how the two legged radish became associated with Daikoku. Age: Meiji Period. A large antique Meiji period Kutani plate decorated with motifs of peonies set in the center of the plate surrounded by gold scrolling vines and stylized flowers. The pink peonies are done in an unglazed-like style while the blue peonies are done with glaze. The underside of the plate is decorated with scrolling vines set in a green background. Additionally, the center of the back contains the inscription, Dai Nippon Kutani sei, or produced by Dai Nippon Kutani...

This is a fine early Japanese Satsuma Koro done in the early or Gosu style. The stained decorative lid appears to be bronze. In person it is more detailed and attractive than the images show. Of note on the inside rim there is a fired factory flaw that is shown in the last image. Condition is excellent it stands 4 inches tall.

Museum piece from the Late Edo Period (could be earlier) from Iga in Mie Prefecture near Shigaraki, another great kiln producing area outside of Kyoto.

This is a very nice Meiji vase from Meizan. It has excellent gold detail and enameling. It is even finished off at the inner top rim area with fine white enamel beads. The work rivals that from the Yabu Meizan factory and it is believed that some of the Meizan artists went on to work for Yabu Meizan. This beautiful 5 inch piece has slight wear to the gold but overall is in outstanding condition.

This is a great little Japanese satsuma vase. It is highly detailed and the 40 or so children are all very expressive. Amazingly the vase stands only 3 inches tall. This is truly a wonderful micro-detailed piece and I believe it was made with the beautiful and tough mercury fired gold. You will need glasses to appreciate all the fine detail. It is partially signed on the bottom and minutely signed in a banner held by one of the children...

A healthy round-faced, plump figured, seated boy wearing a typical high hat of boy doll figures of the period. He is also wearing a checker-patterned loincloth. His hands are positioned under his chin, where he is holding his hat ties together.
