$4,500.00 Wonderful Indian bronze altar with the Hindu god Vishnu flanked by two female consorts, the three figures stand together on a raised platform with the four armed Vishnu in the center, a many headed naga (cobra snake) opens it's hood like an umbrella over Vishnu's head, a flat nimbus behind the figures depicts tendrils of water flowing from the mouths of two makara. Southern India. 19th century.

The tradition of lions guarding doors and gates is ancient and common to a great variety of cultures, including the Egyptians, Assyrians, Romans, and Chinese. There is a strong Chinese influence in this piece, suggesting open relations between the two cultures.

There are 12 gold coins with images of 6 ancient kings - six on each side. There are 2 kings that we recognize - one is Vasudeva I, the other is "Ohsho" holding an elephant goad, thunderbolts, a trident and a goat. The center bead is a oblong fluted gold bead. There are also two blue glass beads flanking the central gold bead.

The decor is incised with a character fighting a snake, details are inlaid in gold. 3 fantastic animals are arranged on the sides on either side of the ewer, they are treated in high relief and seem to be in solid bronze and to be one with the body of ewer because we do not see any welding or rivets...
