This tall and impressive pottery figure was made during the early Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is "heavily-potted" and made from a fairly high-fired pale greyish-brown pottery. It has been "cold-painted" in a base coat of creamy-white pigment with details picked out on top in red and black pigments, especially to the head and face.

A very large authentic Tang tomb guardian wearing a typical warrior's uniform standing on an evil earth creature with remains of the original pigments. The guardian was there to protect the tomb from these evil creatures. The item was found with its parts separated.Large statues like this were made in several parts. See last photo.
