Chinese Qing dynasty Qianlong period geyao type shallow bowl covered overall with a fine crackle glaze on a creamy white ground. The high foot rim is glazed on the exterior. The recessed base is glazed and the glaze extends part way up the inner side of the inward slanting foot where it ends with an orange burn line. The flat panels are decorated with four moulded vertical stylized "dan" (tranquility) characters flanked by two bats each, symbolizing happiness and joy. The curved shoulder is encircled with small, impressed flowers. The bottom corners extend onto short, flat feet along the edge of the base. This form of furniture was originally constructed as a jewelry box for ladies, but was also used later as a scholar's box. A very large and rare unique lacquer panel screen with a variety of stone carvings of Quanyin and Her Disciples. The carved gold leaf panels most likely depict the life of the owner.
