Chinese Eastern Wei - Northern Qi Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Armoured Rider

This fine and rare pottery model of a horse & rider was made in the 6th Century during either the Eastern Wei Dynasty (AD 534 - 550) or the following Northern Qi Dynasty (AD 550 - 577). Pottery horses from this period have a distinct style different to the more common and later Tang Dynasty equivalents.

Wonderful Late Qing, Early Republic era Peking glass pink snowstorm snuff bottle with a layer of black, then white, hand carved so that both colors can be seen clearly. The subject matter being fishing with a man and 2 boys, sea life, a boat, trees, birds and of course a big flopping fish. Fine Tall Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Rider with Oxford TL Test

Early to mid 19c light greyish/celadon jade medallion in circular form having a central Kylin surrounded by symbols. Superbly carved and pierced with the finest details with a worked edge having the back indented and smoothly finished. A fundamental form covered in gaseous rusty clouds by Hashimoto Tomonari enclosed in the original signed wooden box. On an unusual note, it is raised ever so slightly on a central foot, allowing it to float just over the surface upon which it rests. The cylinder has a split around the top, a feature the artist uses as an enhancement to the character. It is 21 cm diameter, 18.5 cm tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist before the show.

Provenance: Swiss-Dutch family living in Indonesia in the first half of the 20th C. Condition: few traces of usage. An antique Japanese Tansu chest made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. Original hand forged iron hardware with an age old replacement lock on the bottom drawer. Hirute style drawer handles. Constructed using straight dovetail joinery with hardened wooden nails. With two side Warabite carrying handles.

Used by a merchant to store valuable small items and money.

Antique Japanese carved wooden figure of a fu-dog (fu-lion) guardian. Traces of paint and gold guilt remain. The underside has writing in ink and a translation which reads: "This pair of Foo-lions was donated to the gate of Myoken Nichiren Shrine in Noma village of the province of Sesshu (near Osaka) on the date of 9th May, 7th year of Genroku ra. (1694 AD) by Gendo Ujihiro Inoue for his memory of accomplishment of repeating "Nichiren" prayer 300 times."

Lovely Japanese Hira Taiko Drum, made from a light hardwood, and hung from a Hiratsuri stand. The drum has iron studding to keep its drum skins in place and gold kanji/kana on a black metal strip, with a gold taiko logo for Maru Masa. A drumstick is included which hangs off a hook from the Hiratsuri stand. Makes a lovely drum sound as it is intact and in good condition. Tall antique Japanese all Bamboo basket skillfully woven and artistic style. Handle of bamboo was specially grown and picked to meet the shape of basket's sides. Wonderful and unique twists and curves of basket, with criss cross design. Beautiful deep color of bamboo.
