Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Buddhist Lotus Jar

This rare and interesting pottery jar was made between the 10th and 13th centuries, during the Five Dynasties period (AD 906 - 960), Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province.�

It is quite "heavily-potted" and relatively highly-fired. The jar and cover have been formed with a lotus leaf design...

Chinese brown glazed pottery granary jar, with cylindrical shape, decorated with bands of incised lines, and supported by three legs in the shape of bears. Lead glaze with copper is the main colorant used in Han period to produce brown glaze. Brownware became popular during the Eastern Han period.

Large Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Painted Pottery Buddhist Jar with Sanskrit Inscription

This large pottery jar was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279), or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province.

It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and a very elegant example of its type. It stands on quite an elaborate integral pedestal with the lower body decorated with bands of applied lotus leaves...

From our Early Chinese Collection, a rare earthenware Buddhist offering vessel dating from either the Song or Yuan Dynasty (960-1368 AD). This offering vessel is one of a group of several highly obscure and esoteric pottery pieces hailing from Yunnan Province in Southwestern China. A blue-grey glazed pottery form of a large-eyed turtle. The turtle shell has relief patterns over which a glaze was applied.

Period: Song (10th - 13th Century, China)

Size: Length = 5.5 cm from head to tail. Height = 3.8 cm

Condition: Very good. No breaks. Natural crackle in the glaze from age.

This is a unique and rare offering of a highly desirable Changsha kiln jar. Based on archaeological records, Changsha wares originated and were developed from the foundations of the Yue Zhou kilns which were built prior to the Tang Dynasty in the same region. Usually these are characterized by such components such as under-glazed brown and green motifs and with molded design in relief, appliqué designs or impressed designs in relief and also incised or carved designs...

A porcelain stem-cup was uniquely molded.
By a geometric pattern of lines and circles which were composed by dozens of pointed clay dunes on the outer surface, the stem-cup was applied with the milky-yellow glaze inside and outside until to the portion of the stem trunk...
