Fine Chinese Tang Dynasty Horse & "Fat Man" Rider with Oxford TL Test

This fine pottery model of a horse and rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). Sitting on the horse is a male courtier, often referred to as a "fat man", the male equivalent of the "fat lady"; note the clothing and hairstyle. It is made from a relatively high-fired buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments.

Chinese rare Sancai glazed pottery figure of a standing horse. The saddle pad is glazed with four colors including a rare blue. The saddle itself is covered with a vermillion slip and naturalistically modeled with sweeping folds of fabric. Most exquisite is the graceful arching of the horses neck, the slight turn of the perfectly proportioned head, and one whimsically turned back ear. With TL test papers.

A rare and complete group of an ox and carriage in grey pottery with remains of polychrome. China, Tang Dynasty (618-907). The result of the thermoluminescence test by Kotalla is consistent with the dating of this lot. The report is included in the sale. Dimensions: the carriage H. 32 cm, L. 23 cm, the ox H. 18 cm, L. 23 cm. Condition: very good, no visible repairs, although repairs on early pottery are quite common and accepted. An xxl superb 64 cm high male attendant carrying his masters pibe and tobacco pouch. The figure is decorated with red, black and white pigmented colors. The glazed areas are held in green and yellow sancai colors. It dates to the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 AD.
