SEATED STATUE OF MALE DEITY

Probably a wooden image of 'Tenjin' (Heavenly God), Medieval times (13c-17c) or later, Japan. H 47 x W 28 x D 16 cm (18.50 x 11.02 x 6.29in). In weathered condition due to age as is as seen, with worm-eaten marks and its wooden dust comes out. Such a removable wooden support is attached since it does not stand on its own.

This is a silk kimono from the Edo period that is dyed with natural plants and made with tsutsugaki. The carp swimming in the rough waves is drawn in great detail using the tsutsugaki technique. There are slight dye spots, but there is no damage or stains and it is in very good condition. Japanese antique ceramic figure of a sleeping Maneki Neko (Beaconing Cat). A rare take on the popular good luck symbol, this sculpture is also an incense burner. Shown with eyes tight asleep and colorful collar painted in detail. On his back side are two raised hollyhock leaves, one of which lifts out to reveal an opening where incense can be placed. The smoke would then exit the ears of the sleeping cat.
