Seated Kukai (774—835, posthumously known as Kobo-Daishi), with characteristic attributes gokosho (5-pronged vajra) in the right hand and juzo (Buddhist rosary) in the left, sculpted from sandstone. Late-Edo/Meiji Era ca. 1875. Very minor old loss. Excellent lichen accumulation overall.

An impressive magnifying glass with a carved ivory handle with 18 natural red coral beads. We believe the ivory handle to be a Meiji period Japanese parasol handle and sometime in its history converted to a magnifying glass. In very good antique condition with all beads intact, the handle measures 5 inches x 1 1/8". Magnifying glass with handle is 10.5 inches long.

Japanese Edo period carved wood polychrome and gilt Buddhist figure in the form of Bishamonten, one of the Guardian Dieties of the Four Directions (representing North). A protector of the Buddhist faith, Bishamonten is clad in armor and holds a stupa believed to carry the ashes of the Buddha, and by extension, the teachings of the Buddha. A rare and elegant shaped of celadon ewer, the foot and body with octagonal side, decorated with carved incised overlapping lappets, the neck rising slight tapering becomes dish shaped mouth. Covered overall with yellowish green celadon glaze. Foot rim unglazed firing into reddish tone. Northern Song dynasty, Zhejiang Longquan wares. Condition is perfect with free from any restoration. High: 19.5cm.

This is the kimono which a girl wore for the Taisho era period. The pattern is ball and Spinning top and others. A color is pretty, and this is stylish. There are 2.3 places of small stains, but does not stand out. There is no damage. Size 92cm x 81cm (36.2 "x 31.8")

This is Chuya-Obi used for Edo period. In Chuya-Obi, one side is twill fabrics, and other aspects are black satin. As for this, the basics of twill fabrics are dyed with a natural indigo plant. And a thread dyed with other plant dye is interwoven. The black satin side has 2.3 places of split points. The twill fabrics side has some stains, but does not stand out. There is no damage on the plane of twill fabrics. Size 384cmx 32.5cm (151.8 "x 12.7")

Cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay dating to early Edo Period. Shape and style make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical black oniita engobe inside and outside - with the exception of the bottom - over which a white, feldspatic Shino glaze has been poured. Just the foot ring and its immediate surrounding was left unglazed, and a triangle decoration is scratched into the iron...

Looking as though it were cast from molten rock, this chawan has a very earthy and primal feel to it. The rich clay shows through in places hinting of ochre, yellow, and even a subtle metallic blue—cleverly mimicking the way mineral formations appear in nature. The uneven texture and pitting of the glaze serve to enhance this effect.

A lovely mizusashi for tea-ceremony. This piece dates from the Edo period and is of the e-Seto variety, “e” meaning drawing. Featuring rich earthy tones and intricate hand-drawn stencil designs of what appear to be a ring of passion flowers resting on a vine, this splendid composition leaves a lasting impression. DESCRIPTION: A Chinese scholar’s calligraphy brush, the brush crafted with natural bristles encased in a horn ferrule. These are secured with a silver band to a pitted green jade handle inscribed with archaic characters and terminating in a round knob. A quality, well made brush in excellent condition, most likely dating to the latter Qing Dynasty to early republic Period. DIMENSIONS: 9 ¼” long (23.5 cm).
