Chinese Han Dynasty Burnished Pottery Cocoon Jar

This wonderfully-shaped pottery jar of very good proportions was made during the early part of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) or possibly as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC). This type of jar is often referred to as a "cocoon jar" due to the shape of its body. Its function was that of a grain storage jar.

The dark wood netsuke depicts a grinning boy pulling down his eye lid in a teasing gesture in a game of “bekkako”. His left arm behind his back holds a mask of a fox.
