This fine old mask would have been used in the same family for several generations to perform rituals such as those for a newborn baby and maturation. The wood for this important mask would have been taken from dep in the forest where spirits were believed to live. 14.5 inches, 37 cm.

Two very playful Southeast Asian panthers skillfully carved from red palm wood. They can be displayed on any one of 3 sides and look as thought they were designed to be viewed in whatever position you place them. Each tiny bead is hand folded into a geometrical shape, some of them still have traces of gold wash I doubt if this kind of craftsmanship can be done today.
