The figure is shown standing, with his left hand stroking his long beard, while his faithful toad climbs up his left shoulder.
Warm patina, with more yellowish tones on the reverse.

EUR €1,800 An ivory netsuke depicting a monkey crouching on a rock. The face, vivid and expressive, is inlaid with horn eyes.
The fur and limbs are finely carved with delicate lines and meticulous attention to detail.
The himotoshi is carved beneath the base and exits on the side of the rock.

Sold The netsuke features a kappa head with a long bend beak. It is made from a stag horn, has a deep green patina, double inlayed eyes and inlayed himatoshi.
A kappa (河童, "river-child") is a type of yōkai, or supernatural creature, that inhabits rivers, lakes, and swamps. They are typically depicted as amphibious, human-like beings with a turtle-like shell on their back, webbed hands and feet, and a depression on their head that holds water.
Perfect condition.
