OHARAE KATASHIRO

Traditional Japanese Shinto paper doll as the substitute for a person, used as the target for a prayer or curse called 'Katashiro', used in the great purification rituals called 'Oharae' (ref. https://www.kamigamojinja.jp/en/rituals/nagoshi-no-oharae-purification-ritual/). This is an old dead stock set with no written name or age as unused. Showa period, 20th century. Katashiro - 12.2 x 8 cm (4.80 x 3.14in) each...

An oki-goro incense burner made up of a hollowed burl of wood set onto a beautiful exotic dark-wood stand in the manner much appreciated by scholars of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Incense burnt inside on a metal stand would have produced smoke which drifted out through holes in the high peak of the burl, and around the base, like a mountain visible in the mist. It is 17 x 10.5 x 9 cm (7 x 4 x 3-1/2 inches) and is in overall excellent condition.

DANCING LONG-HEAD GOD

God of wisdom and longevity called 'Fukurokuju' as the one of the Japanese Seven Lucky Gods (ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukurokuju). Made of 'toso' (type of wood composition) inserted 'gyokugan' (glass eyes) into. 19th - early 20th century, Japan. H 23 x W 21 x D 10.5 cm (9.05 x 8.26 x 4.13in)...

Japanese, Edo period, carved and painted wood Noh mask. Depicting Otafuku (popularly known as Okame), boldly and adeptly carved with full, deep, expressive features. Painted white all over, blackened teeth as was the custom, red lips, and black hair in distinct, fine brush strokes for affect. The hollowed out verso displaying the tool marks of the unknown artisan. Surfaces moderately distressed and with much patina from use and handling. Length, 8 1/4 inches.

Sculpture carved out of the root section of a keyaki tree. A fox looking back. The roots that grew downwards form the legs, a small root growing horizontally forms the tail. The base section was originally the hollow trunk, filled in with an oval piece of keyaki (zelkova) wood. Wood polished.

Two dramatic Bunraku Puppet Kashira (heads) from the Awaji puppet carving tradition. The male is Kumagai Naozane, a character from the Heikei Monogatari present at the Battle of Ichinotani made by Ryuun. The female figure is Yaegakehime from the play Honcho Nijushi ko. They are both roughly 20 cm (8 inches) tall from the neck, 40 cm (16 inches) tall as they are seen on their stands respectively and are in excellent condition...

Oshie (raised cloth picture) with samurai, which is displayed with hina-dolls on the Girl's Festival, or Hina-Matsuri, on March 3rd. It is from a collector in Matsumoto city in Nagano prefecture, and this one was made by a craftsperson in the city too. Made of several kinds of silk, gold brocade, silk crepe, black satin, etc. The face is hand-painted. The back side is washi. In excellent condition. Late 19th early 20th century. W:33cm, L:45cm
