$500.00 Hanten made of indigo dye cotton with beautiful Shonai sashiko, which is made in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. Sashiko technique is so well that it looks almost machine sewn. It is made of two layers of cloth. It has cloth under arms with sashiko, named "kaki-no-hana", flower of persimmon, for ease of moving. The long one is made of handspun cotton and has some stains and a few holes, however it has beautiful vegetable indigo dye asa cloth inside. The short one is twill weave and in excellent condition. Sold. Thank you. Han-gappa made of washi, Japanese handmade paper, which is made from mulberry fibers. It is painted with paulownia oil and kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for waterproof. The word kappa was taken from Portuguese "capa" which was worn by Portuguese Christian missionaries, who came in mid 16th century. The early kappa was circular form, and one with sleeves was made later, especially for traveling...

The inscription on the back by a monk Maezono Hokyo reads that the donor, Mr. Sugaeda asked the then Minister of the Right, Kasanoin Ieatsu (1789-1866) to write the kanji for the plaque of the teahouse he was donating to Kitano Shrine in Kyoto.This was 2 years before Kasanoin Ieatsu resigned.
