Hanten made of indigo dye cotton with beautiful Shonai sashiko, which is made in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. Sashiko technique is so well that it looks almost machine sewn. It is made of two layers of cloth. It has cloth under arms with sashiko, named "kaki-no-hana", flower of persimmon, for ease of moving. Heavily used bag made of hemp whose wefts and warps are hand-plied and vegetable indigo dyed. The lining is hand-spun cotton and vegetable indigo dyed too. Straw scraps are found inside, so it might have been used by a farmer. It has tsutsugaki "Naganuma-mura", several of same name villages are existing, or existed. It is most likely it is Naganuma-mura in Iwate prefecture, now in Kitakami city. The family name is "Ito" but the first name in unreadable. It has holes, wear and mending...

Two bags, made of cotton and vegetable indigo dye, the long one is for coins and the short one is possibly for bank notes, or other items. Both have owner's logos with sashiko. The long one is made of handspun cotton and has some stains and a few holes, however it has beautiful vegetable indigo dye asa cloth inside. The short one is twill weave and in excellent condition. Han-gappa made of washi, Japanese handmade paper, which is made from mulberry fibers. It is painted with paulownia oil and kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for waterproof. The word kappa was taken from Portuguese "capa" which was worn by Portuguese Christian missionaries, who came in mid 16th century. The early kappa was circular form, and one with sleeves was made later, especially for traveling...

Beautiful teahouse plaque dated late Edo Period, Ca. 1861. The inscription on the back by a monk Maezono Hokyo reads that the donor, Mr. Sugaeda asked the then Minister of the Right, Kasanoin Ieatsu (1789-1866) to write the kanji for the plaque of the teahouse he was donating to Kitano Shrine in Kyoto.This was 2 years before Kasanoin Ieatsu resigned. A wonderful, humorous carved wooden sculpture of Oni no Nenbutsu, a natur spirit very popular in Japanese folktales. He stands with hammer in right hand to bang his drum and a ledger with the long life register (Japanese Choo Su) in the other hand, he stands in itinerant monk’s robe with a funny grimace on his face.
