USD $425 Fine Antique Kutani Bowl with Butterfly Decoration, Meiji Period (19th c.)
Refined Kutani porcelain bowl featuring a beautifully hand-painted butterfly motif in iron-red, gold, and soft polychrome enamels... Deep clefts filled with mottled glaze are scored into the sides of this stellar sake cup by Nakagawa Jionenbo enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Chohan (Hori Madara) Karatsu Guinomi. It is 6.8 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter, 5.5 cm (just over 2 inches) tall and in perfect condition.
Nakagawa Jinenbo (1953-2011) was a celebrated Japanese ceramic artist always fascinated with Karatsu ware. He studied under the great Inoue Toya from the age of 24... Slight color graduation registers the rim like sunrise on this small sake cup by Miyashita Zenji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Saide-Hai. It is 6.6 cm diameter, 3.3 cm (1 inch tall) and in excellent condition.
Miyashita Zenji (1939-2012) was born into the family of potter Miyashita Zenju, and graduated the Kyoto Municipal University of Art under Kiyomizu Kyubei and Kusube Yaichi... A lovely small plate in pastel colors by Tokuda Junko (Yasokichi IV) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 15.5 cm (6 inches) diameter, 2 cm (1 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Rubbed gilt enamel highlights over archaistic relief decoration in manner of the Eastern Zhou dynasty or Western Han dynasty. The vase, with base reminiscent of the Hu form but with elongated neck, harmoniously combines modern and ancient design sense. The blank apparently two symmetrical halves, joined (see closeup images revealing raised glaze where a seam might be). Eiraku seal mark on the foot. Good condition...
