A Sino~Tibetan Copper ‘Monk’s Cap’ Beer Jug, 19th Century

A very busy design expertly executed in copper using the repoussé technique. The Monk’s cap features Kirtimukha and the spout issues from a Makara whose head is a cross between an elephant and a crocodile. The tip of the spout has a turquoise jewel. The body has a Shou medallion each side, surrounded by thick foliage. The lid consists of a flowering lotus.

Approximately 25 cms high...

Mughal (Northern Indian) hand calligraphy and painted posthumous portrait of Sha Alumfrachu (Shah Alam II), born 1728, ruled from 1760, died 1807. Portrait painting (and perhaps also the calligraphy) by Baboor Alie Khan (court artist Babur Ali Khan), year of Muhammed 1265 (AD 1848), Good condition and with full translation on the verso. A fine Tantric Thangka depicting the Six Arms White Mahakala tramping on Vinayakas ( Ganeshas which create obstacles), Vajradhara is depicted on his crown, and the red Vajravarahi Dakini on his chest. His body is richly ornate with jewels, the left lower hand holding flaming gems, a damaru and a chopper in the other two hands; the right lower hand holding a Kampala with jewels, a trident (trishula), vajra-hook (ankusha) with the other hands...

This is a very fine and rare antique/vintage piece circa 55/60 years old in perfect condition. I purchased this in 1990 and it has been in storage ever since. This was embroidered by the Dhebaria Rabari ethnic group from East Kutch, it should be noted that this group has ceased doing embroidery over 40 years ago. W: 120cm/47.2in and H: 73cm/28.8in. The silk triangular pieces at the bottom are probably a later addition...

Rare elaborately created kapala with a rock crystal "skull cap", put inside a sort of bowl made of an open work gilt copper garland of 11 Citipati skulls, with three Citipati skulls and a fierce Mahakala head on its rim, the whole group resting on an openwork gilt copper stand sustained by three standing Citipati. Tibet, early 20th century. Height: 20.5 cm. Length: 15.7 cm. Very good condition.

Antique Himalayan stele of Vishnu on Garuda carved of brown Mithuna stone. The Hindu God, Vishnu is shown here on his mount (vahana), Garuda. The giant bird deity (with the power to go anywhere), is carved in anthropomorphic form. The crowned figure of Vishnu holds four of his attributes: the conch shell, the club (or mace), the discus, and the lotus (padma)...

A rare and powerful image of the Lion-headed Dakini, Simhamukha, a major Nyingmapa yidam, in a jumping/dancing pose. She holds chopper and skull cup in her hands and has the skin of a corpse slung over her shoulders. Carved in precious Zitan wood, remains of colors and gold. Large zitan images are often made of several parts due to scarcity of this type of wood. In this case the image is made of two pieces of zitan. H 19.5 cm...

Very rare Citipati phurbu, finely carved, representing, from top to bottom, first a circular platform in relief decorated with stylised lotuses, below four Citipati skulls in relief with a pitcher and a trident in between, then below the "handle" with a chevron design, and finally the bottom "blade" with a "makara" head in relief with two snakes in relief behind it. The phurbu is made of wood, with a fine age patina and some abrasion due to great age. Height: 27.5 cm...
