A Chinese blue and white elephant kendi, Ming dynasty, Wanli period, 16th/early 17th century. Condition: Usual fritting, a small hairline and small chip to rim of vase. Otherwise good. Similar examples can be found in the British Museum, the Topkapi Palace Museum and in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

This small hammered copper vase is inlaid with silver and different metals in 3 copper alloys, giving respectively tones of yellow, brown and cream, this very particular technique of mixed metals that one never meets on similar objects made in Vietnam at the end of the 19th century, announces a totally different object, moreover the aesthetics and the style of the drawings is not Vietnamese as well as the form, this is a Chinese creation of the 19th century and perhaps earlier...

These two thin mother-of-pearl plaques are entirely carved with a multitude of figures and animals. These small sculptures must illustrate a moment in Vietnamese history, for while horsemen are at war on one of them, the figures are living peacefully on the other. On the back, Chinese characters are crudely incised and appear to be information rather than artist signatures. Probably Vietnamese work, 19th century or earlier, but possibly executed in southern China. 82mm x 64mm, 2mm thick.
