Fine & Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Black Pottery Censer

We have recently been lucky enough to have acquired a collection of very rare examples of burnished black pottery items made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). Such items are relatively unknown and very little has been published about them. They are found in the northern provinces, particularly Gansu province in the north-west.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed Horse & Rider

This impressive and detailed pottery model of a horse and rider was made during the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368 - 1644). It has been coated in green, amber and black glazes. The rider's head has been made separately and has been "cold-painted" in black and white pigments: the head fits into a slot in the neck of the rider. Note the detail to the rider's clothing, the various fittings and especially the horse's mane...

One of a kind. Wonderful and important Chinese Hawksbill Tortoise Tenmoku Chawan from the Jizhou kiln of Southern Sung. It has a wonderful crazing and still vivid colours. The tea bowl was part of the collection of Dr. Walther von Krenner, one of the best connaisseurs of Asian Art in the world and writer of several books on Chinese and Japanese ceramics.

It comes with a tailor made Japanese wooden box from a former owner...

Pair of charming Yixing ceramic fu dogs with black bulging eyes. Female dog guardian has two puppies and the male has a ball under his paw. Incense holes on each side of mouth. Each holding ribbon in mouth.

Here is another stunning chawan, a Nogime (hare's fur) Tenmoku tea bowl from the Jian Kilns - made in the Southern Song era (Chinese: 南宋; 1127–1279). Such tea bowls were one of the first tea bowls in Japan, which came together with the first tea from China.

Little refined iron bearing clay, with iron oxide, thrown into the typical tenmoku shape...

This is a beautifully decorated Neolithic vase, standing just over 7" in height. While the body of the vase is intact and free of repair, it appears to me that the top may have been ground down, although I'm not 100% sure. Additionally, one or more of the four horn-like projections near the rim appear to have been reattached and/or replaced. Notwithstanding, the decoration and potting are superb, as the photos hopefully will show...

This is a painted earthenware double-loop handled vase of a type generally classified as Majiayao culture (Machang style). The piece measures just under 5-1/2" inches high and is completely intact and free of repair. Exceptional root marking is visible on the surface which is painted in a series of loops and swirls. Beautifully potted example.

Three(3) Chinese Sancai Monochrome soft Pottery Offering Miniatures, consist of rice cakes, dates or some sort of fruits and duck on top of dish, approximately 2 1/2" wide each, some small chips on the rims.

This is an intact and very fine example of this ware which, to me, seems to incorporate a human torso, standing with arms and legs akimbo. The colors are quite vivid, with an aubergine purple in addition to the black outlining. The piece is well and thinly potted, standing some 7" in height.It swells out to some 7" in diameter, measured across the area of the two rings ("lugs").

A very nice, decorative and rare Fahua Ware hoop pended pot with three coloured Scroll Pattern. Ming Dynasty, 15th century. H: 23,2 cm. Diameter: 21,8 cm. Condition: Very nice original condition. Extraordinary well preserved, glossy glaze. On two places there is a glaze split off ( please look the images ) which most probably did happen during the burning of the jar or shortly later - in any case hundreds of years ago...

Two green glazed Shekwan / Shiwan jars, probably late 19th century. Both with molded decoration of flower sprigs and a ruyi border. Jars like these were placed on either side of a grave as offerings, one containing rice and the other water. Height "3 ½ / 9 cm, diameter "4 and 4 ½ / 10 and 11 cm respectively. Condition: fine. Antique Chinese Yixing snuff bottle of fine porous unglazed body of 'purple clay'. It's front side a landscape scene in white slip and back side with a prunus floral design, sides with pierced handles. Red agate and bronze ring cap cover. Good condition with impressed seal on inset bottom.
