His attributes include his large forehead, representing wisdom, and his long beard to show longevity. Shou Lao also holds a long staff and a peach branch to also symbolize a long and prosperous life. Shoulao is carved with a small boy riding a deer, who holds a magic box from which a bat flies out (an auspicious motif) and a crane.
